Why women SHOULD lift weights

post-workout

I don’t know how many times I have overheard a female tell her friends that she doesn’t lift weights because she doesn’t want to “bulk up.” As if lifting a 20lb weight one time would automatically make her develop 18-inch biceps. Women should not be afraid to lift weights because in reality, it helps build lean muscle, which will actually burn more fat than cardio alone.

Here are a few reasons we think women should get their lift on:

  • You’ll lose more fat – 40% more fat to be exact, according to Women’s Health. Penn State conducted a study where they put dieters into three groups: no exercise, aerobic only, and aerobic and weight training. While they all lost around the same amount of weight, the group that also included weight training lost 6 more pounds of fat, rather then fat and muscle. Losing muscle and fat may decrease the number on your scale but you will more than likely put that weight back on.
  • You’ll eat healthier – Have you ever noticed that once you start exercising regularly, your diet seems to improve? Exercise helps your brain stick to a diet because you don’t want to waste all of the time you just spent working out on a large order of fries. You will also start snacking smarter because your body needs appropriate fuel to complete your strength training workouts.
  • You’ll burn calories, even when you have already left the gym – Muscle burns fat, even while your body is at rest – so the more muscle you have, the more calories you will be burning. Researchers have found that exercising larger muscles can result in a higher metabolism for up to 39 hours after the exercise was completed.
  • It will make your heart happy – Researchers at the University of Michigan found that people who did three total-body weight workouts a week for two months decreased their diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) by an average of eight points. That’s enough to reduce the risk of a stroke by 40 percent and the chance of a heart attack by 15 percent.

CrossFit has really opened women’s eyes when it comes to weight training. Lifting weights is important to add to your fitness routine, so don’t worry about getting bulky. Instead, you will see your body become more lean and toned. Here at Total Fitness Revolution we love lifting weights!
