Pilates is one of the most beneficial workouts that you can do, no matter where you are in your fitness journey. The Pilates method was developed by Joseph Pilates as a means to improve flexibility, build strength, and develop control and endurance in the whole human body. The Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced based on your individual fitness goals and/or limitations.
Pilates aims to lengthen and strengthen your muscles, which leads to strong, tone muscles. While Pilates focuses on core strength, it trains all of the muscles in your body in tandem. Your core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles to support your spine and movement.
A few of the benefits of regularly practicing Pilates include:
- Increased Core Strength and Stability: Building abdominal muscles will help protect your lower back, aiding in injury prevention and spinal health.
- Improves Alignment: This will in turn balance muscles and improve posture.
- Reduced Stress: The fluid movements paired with rhythmic breathing helps to reduce stress and tension.
- Improved Flexibility: Pilates works toward a safe increase in length, as well as stretching the muscles and range of motion within the joints.
Pilates also focuses on deep breathing, referred to as “Pilates breathing.” Joseph Pilates saw deep breathing as a way for one to “cleanse and invigorate” while exercising. Full inhalation and exhalation is key to this breathing method. He advised people to take a very full deep breathe, and then squeeze out the lungs as they would wring out a wet towel.
